Traveling is an action-packed activity which can be incredibly demanding on a person’s body the first day of their trip. Between sitting in an airplane cabin with recycled germs, to having to beat the clock to run from connection to connection, it can start to take it’s toll on your health before you’ve even reached your destination.

Unfortunately, some people fail to take the proper precautions throughout the entirety of their travels, and eventually fall ill during their vacation. As a result, their trip is affected, and they feel lethargic and unwell.

If you want to avoid falling sick during your precious time off, follow these tips to stay healthy while traveling.

Limit Alcohol Consumption

Even though you may want to take advantage of your time off by celebrating, drinking excessively will only lead to making your immune system weaker. Drinking in moderation is much less likely to make you feel fatigued and susceptible to any illnesses that you come across during your travels.

Additionally, drinking affects your sleep, stopping you from feeling refreshed when you wake up. The last thing that you want is to come home from a vacation only to feel exhausted rather than refreshed.

Wash Your Hands Frequently

Any time that you’re coming into contact with surfaces which are touched by a wide variety of hands, you want to make sure that you wash your hands regularly. Even the slightest amount of germs can have a detrimental effect on your health, so you’re best off keeping your hands as clean as possible.

If you aren’t around running water regularly during your trip, consider carrying around a small bottle of anti-bacterial solution. It’s great for staying clean on the go.

Get Plenty Of Sleep

Even though you may be enticed to fit in as much sightseeing and activities as possible into your trip, it’s important not to burn yourself out. A vacation is supposed to rejuvenate you and be a time of relaxation.

You’re missing the entire point if you go back to work feeling fatigued and needing a vacation from your vacation.

Eat In Recommended Locations

Depending on where you are in the world, you may find that some locations are more likely than others for food cross-contamination. Since some places don’t have the resources for proper hygiene, you want to be careful about where you eat.

It may reduce your chances of getting ill from food by only eating in places which come recommended. You can usually ask your hotel concierge or Airbnb host for their recommendations or look on review sites such as Tripadvisor. Although it isn’t always 100% effective for guarding against illness, it does reduce the risk.
